Education Shouldn't be a Debt Sentence

Since the 2009 BC election, student aid has been cut by 28% despite a written election promise to maintain funding.

Before the cut, BC was already dead last in the country in the provision of non-repayable financial aid. BC provides 60% less financial aid than the national average.

Student debt in this province is out of control and students deserve need more support. At a time when personal debt threatens the fundamentals of our economy, getting a post-secondary education in the province of BC has become a debt sentence.

As my MLA, I am calling on you to do everything possible to reverse this destructive trend. British Columbians know that universities and colleges are a vital public service that should be accessible to all. To make this happen, the BC government must:

- Increase funding to universities and colleges to deliver high-quality education
- Roll back tuition fees to 2002 levels
- Establish a BC student grants program, and
- Eliminate interest on student loans
